Transforming Healthcare Through Innovation
ESCAL BME - Biomedical Engineering Research Group is a pioneering research group at the Department of Computer Engineering, University of Peradeniya, where engineering excellence meets medical innovation. We develop transformative healthcare technologies that address critical challenges in diagnosis, treatment, and patient monitoring.
Our multidisciplinary team specializes in brain-computer interfaces (BCI), AI-driven dental imaging and diagnosis, ECG-based emotion recognition, and near-infrared (NIR) medical devices. We work on projects ranging from non-invasive EEG systems for controlling virtual objects to deep learning models for root canal treatment assessment and oral cancer detection. Our expertise spans biosignal processing (ECG, EEG, sEMG), medical image analysis, and embedded systems development.
Through collaborations with hospitals, dental schools, and research institutions, we publish in top-tier journals (Nature, IEEE Access, Oral Oncology) and create practical medical solutions including NIR devices for vein visualization and microvascular surgery, GPU-accelerated ECG analysis systems, and AI-powered diagnostic tools that make advanced healthcare technology accessible to clinical practice.
