This Entrepreneurial , Innovation and Pitching event had around 50 teams participating in the event after a preliminary qualification held offline. The competitors participated in the competition ranged from MSc Holders to Undergraduates. after the first round the team IT Crowd got selected to Top Six and after the second round they eventually went on to win the
completion. The Event was graced by more than 15 national and international entrepreneurs businessmen who appreciated the effort thrown in by the team.


The Idea Pitched by the Team IT crowd started as their second year project in the university which is about developing the concept of smart lockers.

The outgoing president, Mr. Malitha Liyanage commenced the meeting by welcoming all the members and sharing a few memories of the events conducted during the past year. After presenting the meeting minutes of the last annual general meeting and the budget report for the last year by the secretary, Mr. Hashan Eranga, and the junior treasurer, Mr. Nipun Dewanarayane, the new office bearers of ACES for the term 2021/22 were appointed.

Accordingly, Mr. Randika Viraj was appointed as the President for the new term. Next up was the appointment for the role of Vice President and Mr. Thushara Weerasundara was appointed for it. Subsequently, Mr. Imesh Balasuriya and Mr. Ridma Jayasundara were appointed for the roles of Secretary and Assistant Secretary respectively. Afterwards, Dr. Isuru Nawinne, a Senior Lecturer of the department, was assigned as the Senior Treasurer followed by the appointment of Mr. Nadeesha Diwakara as the Junior Treasurer. Then, Miss Nanduni Gamage and Miss Isara Tillekaratne were appointed for the roles of Editor and Junior Editor respectively. Finally, eight committee members were assigned representing the batches E16, E17, and E18 as follows; Mr. Kavindu Hewamanage, Mr. Deshan Liyanaarachchi, and Mr. Heshan Dissanayake, representing the E16 batch, Mr. Pubudu Bandara and Mr. Adithya Gallage representing the E17 batch and Mr. Ishta Jayakody, Miss Roshila Sewwandi and Mr. Ruchira Tharaka, representing the E18 batch.

After appointing the new members, Mr. Randika, the newly appointed president took a few moments to thank the past committee for their hard work. Also, he further added a brief introduction to the upcoming plans and asked for any opinions and suggestions regarding this endeavor. The latter part of the meeting comprised a discussion among the staff members and the students on the suggestions for the upcoming year. Prof. Roshan Ragel expressed his idea that the pandemic situation has brought forth the need for online events and that ACES could be at the forefront of organizing such events with novel concepts. It was highlighted that having two plans for the online mode as well as the physical mode could be beneficial to overcome the uncertainties and the AGM marked the conclusion with a bunch of experience-based advice and great congratulations to the new committee for the upcoming year.

ACES is looking forward to bring more creative and productive programs in the coming year and invites everyone to stay tuned.

2nd runners up in Biomedical Engineering Design Competition https://cepdnaclk.github.io/department-website-2021/2019/12/10/department-undergraduates-emerging-as-2nd-runners-up-in-biomedical-engineering-design-competition/ Tue, 10 Dec 2019 12:03:22 +0000 https://cepdnaclk.github.io/department-website-2021/?p=393851 Team CrunchCode was able to emerge as the 2nd runners up at Brainstorm 2019, Sri Lanka’s Premier Biomedical Engineering Design Competition, organized by the IEEE EMBS Student Branch Chapter at University of Moratuwa. The team which consisted of Hiruna Samarakoon, Anjana Senanayaka, Sanoj Punchihewa of the Faculty of Engineering, Sachith Keragala from the Faculty of Medicine and Hasindu Gamarachchi from University of New South Wales, Australia as the mentor was recognized as the 2nd runners up for their project of a portable real-time DNA analysis toolkit. Their toolkit along with the server that manages devices that run the toolkit enables simultaneous sequencing and analysis of DNA reads. DNA reads can be analyzed for DNA methylation, event alignment and for intermediate tasks like reads alignment, sorting, and indexing. The competition was held on the 7th of December 2019 at the IESL Auditorium.
Among the top 10 were two other teams from the Department of Computer Engineering, University of Peradeniya, the team testing123 that consists of Kaveesha Dilshani, Chamara Gunarathne, and Shehan Perera from the final year and team Genesis 1.0 of Avishka Dhananjaya, Prageeth Savinda and Sewwandie Nanayakkara from the 3rd year.

It was awarded for his final year project based work titled “An ensemble learning approach for improving electrocardiogram based human emotion recognition”, which was supervised by Prof. Roshan Ragel . Theekshana’s work has also been recently published in MDPI sensors journal ( Impact Factor 3.031 ).

Dimuthu was presented with this award (a cash prize and certificate) at the IESL induction and graduation ceremony on Friday, August 16, 2019 .

Department students shine at HackStat 2.0 as winners https://cepdnaclk.github.io/department-website-2021/2019/10/28/department-students-shine-at-hackstat-2-0-as-winners/ Mon, 28 Oct 2019 05:16:35 +0000 https://cepdnaclk.github.io/department-website-2021/?p=393821 Team biteCode consisting of Gihan Jayathilake, Suren Sritharan, Harshana Sumedha and Dhanushki Mapitigama (final year undergraduates of the department) emerged winners from the retail category at the hackStat 2.0 which was organized by the Stat Circle, Department of Statistics, University of Colombo to promote data science in Sri Lanka.

Team eyeCoders, a group of second-year students; Thilini Deshika, Yasitha Bandara Herath, Rusiru Thushara, Sudam Kalapage and Damsy De Silva had been able to secure the 2nd runners up from the insurance category in the same competition.

The competition was held at Microsoft Sri Lanka on the 26th of October 2019. Twenty teams have been selected from a large number of teams that participated in the first round which was held online. In the first round, the competitors had to work with a challenging data set consisting of data of visitors to a website. The final round was held under two categories namely retail and insurance in which the undergraduates of the Department of Computer Engineering were able to grab the top places from both categories.
