Team biteCode consisting of Gihan Jayathilake, Suren Sritharan, Harshana Sumedha and Dhanushki Mapitigama (final year undergraduates of the department) emerged winners from the retail category at the hackStat 2.0 which was organized by the Stat Circle, Department of Statistics, University of Colombo to promote data science in Sri Lanka.

Team eyeCoders, a group of second-year students; Thilini Deshika, Yasitha Bandara Herath, Rusiru Thushara, Sudam Kalapage and Damsy De Silva had been able to secure the 2nd runners up from the insurance category in the same competition.

The competition was held at Microsoft Sri Lanka on the 26th of October 2019. Twenty teams have been selected from a large number of teams that participated in the first round which was held online. In the first round, the competitors had to work with a challenging data set consisting of data of visitors to a website. The final round was held under two categories namely retail and insurance in which the undergraduates of the Department of Computer Engineering were able to grab the top places from both categories.
